PROGRAMMING
NEWS
News
programs represent the backbone of Televisió de Catalunya's
programming and set the network apart from its competitors. TVC
not only has a well-deserved reputation for rigorous reporting
but is also skilled at combining world and local news. As a
result, viewers hold the networks' news programs in high esteem
and TVC's winning formula draws by far the biggest audiences in
Catalonia.
Televisió de Catalunya offers a wide range of
daily news programs. There are five daily newscasts, the early
morning, midday, evening and late night news. TVC's Canal 33
news gives a round up of major news while the local news program
Telenotícies Catalunya, provides more in-depth treatment of
local issues in its special editions for the regions of
Barcelona, Tarragona, Lleida, Girona and the Val d'Aran. TVC's
main newscasts get around 30% of total audience shares.
In addition to straight news, there are also
two report-style programs: Magazine, which covers a wide range
of social and cultural subjects, and The Environment, a program
with a long track record of promoting environmental awareness.
The weather forecasts are popular with viewers and are shown
immediately after the news.
The weekly current affairs magazine 30 Minuts
provides in-depth coverage on a given issue. 30 Minuts has been
airing since TVC's early days and has been awarded more prizes
and won more international prestige for the network than any
other program. It covers subjects which range from local issues
to world affairs and has an audience share of around 22%.
Debates and interviews also have a slot among
TVC's news programs. Canal 33's Agora combines interviews and
debates with live performances. The quality and intellectual
rigor of its discourse have made it a landmark in its genre.
Televisió de Catalunya's News Services have
also won a reputation for their quick response and coverage of
major news stories. In addition to regular newscasts, the
network also produces special news programs to cover dramatic
events. The vast majority of viewers choose TV3 whenever there
is important breaking news.
Migdia, Vespre, Última Hora i Notícies 33- condensen
qüestions molt diverses dels àmbits social i cultural, i
i entrevistes.
SPORTS
TV3
and Canal 33 devote 1,600 broadcast hours a year to sports. In
their daily news programs full coverage is given to the latest
sports events and Canal 33's daily sports news program, Tot
l'Esport--broadcast weekdays--gives continuity to Saturday and
Sunday retransmissions. The Sunday night program Gol a Gol, on
the air since 1984, gives a complete rundown on the highlights
from all football league games played over the weekend.
The sports department's other main activity is
its retransmissions. Televisió de Catalunya has gone to great
lengths to win the broadcast rights to all major sports events
holding interest for Catalan viewers so they can enjoy them from
their homes on free, open television. These are just some of the
football matches for which Televisió de Catalunya now holds
broadcast rights: Catalan All-Stars, the Champions' League,
Spanish League first and second division matches, Catalan clubs
second division B matches, the King's Cup, and the world's top
ten major leagues; indoor football and friendly matches between
Barça, Espanyol and Lleida. In basketball, TVC holds
retransmission rights for the ACB league, the King's Cup,
European games played by Catalan teams and the Catalan league,
and in handball, for European games and some of the ASOBAL
games. Rights are also held for the broadcast of the Formula 1
world championship and for minority sports such as hockey, ice
hockey, water polo, rugby and special coverage of the USAP in
Perpignan.
Televisió de Catalunya, together with other
organizations, has done everything in its power to encourage
Catalan All-Star teams in all sports.
DRAMA
Televisió
de Catalunya has a strong track record of in-house drama series.
This has proved to be a big step forward, both in terms of
public response and because it significantly boosted the
audiovisual industry in Catalonia. Today Catalonia has a large
number of highly-skilled professionals working in all aspects of
production and direction of drama series and has even
established its own star system.
TVC's series have built up an assiduous
following. This has enabled the network to branch out into new
drama programs, time slots and formats.
Right from the start, TV3's contemporary drama
series were smash hits. Their unprecedented popularity has made
them the subject of academic research and countless press
editorials. They even have their own Internet fan clubs.
Televisió de Catalunya has also successfully
diversified its production of weekly drama and comedy series
that make viewers weep or laugh and which have confirmed TV3's
leadership position in prime time.
The success of these series has caused other
television networks to adopt similar techniques and production
systems in making their own series, which have also achieved
high ratings, and has given TVC's production teams widespread
recognition. |
