| A
TELEVISION WHICH KNOWS NO BOUNDS. THE TV3 TELETHON
Televisió
de Catalunya has put into practice ideas which go beyond
standard programming and which have often been imitated by other
networks. TVC has always been unwavering in its commitment to
professional standards and defense of liberal values.
Every
year, Televisió de Catalunya broadcasts a special live telethon
to raise funds for scientific research on illnesses for which no
cure has yet been found. More than just a program, the TV3
Telethon is a complex, carefully-designed project to make people
more aware of these diseases and to encourage donations.
The TV3 Telethon lasts for 13 hours and is
Spain's longest live television program. During the telethon,
the hard facts about the disease are presented to viewers
through first-hand accounts from sufferers of the disease, and
through interviews with researchers and doctors. But the
serious, scientific side of the program is counterbalanced by a
lighter side, including popular music and entertainment.
The TV3 Telethon is the result of an
impressive joint effort. Year after year over 3000 volunteers
drawn from organizations all over the country take an active
part in the event. Over 200 companies contribute money, services
and material to help develop and carry out an extensive list of
Telethon-related projects. Likewise, well over 200 artists and
television personalities generously agree to contribute their
time and talent to the program.
The TV3 Telethon raises more funds than any
other fundraising program in Spain, when one takes into account
the size of its potential audience. It is not only one of the
most efficient fundraisers but is also one of the best
established telethons worldwide.
The 1999 edition focused on organ transplants.
Record-breaking donations totaled nearly 88,000 and raised a
total of 750 million pesetas, that is, over 4.5 million dollars.
Contributions are invested in reputable research projects by the
TV3 Telethon
Foundation. |
